Strategies to Raise Holiday Sales

One of our readers wrote this article on how business owners can attract holiday sales:

Title: Retail sales jump 1.2%, pushing hope for the holiday season plus 5 simple strategies to raise your sales.

The Commerce Department announced that October '10 sales for the retail industry jumped 1.2 percent from the previous month, the greatest gain since March. The increase was driven by a 5 pct spike in auto sales, which analysts said was particularly encouraging as it showed consumers were ready to tackle big-ticket purchases. Moreover, September's sales gain was revised upward coming from a 0.6 percent increase to 0.7 percent.

Still, consumers remained choosy about where they spent their dollars. Furniture stores and electronics retailers each suffered a 0.7 percent drop in sales. Mall sales also declined 0.7 percent, while health-care stores dipped 0.1 percent.

Instead, people returned to restaurants and bars, sending sales up 0. 3 %. On-line retailers, that have held up better than their bricks-and-mortar counterparts, registered a 0.8 percent jump. Shoppers also bought more clothing, a 0.7 percent increase.

Excluding autos, retail sales rose a good 0.4 percent, despite the mixed performance across sectors. Retailers hope that the momentum will fuel the all-important winter holiday.

According to a survey by the National Retail Federation, a market trade group, nearly 11 percent of consumers have finished the majority of the holiday shopping, up from just over 9 percent a year ago. The group predicted shopper's average spending would inch approximately $688.87 in 2010, a 1 percent increase over this past year.

The NRF's annual holiday survey found more and more shoppers are expected to purchase gifts for family and friends - and also themselves. The quantity of consumers who said they planned to indulge themselves rose eight percentage points to 57 percent in 2010.

The forecasts, as well as the new October data, paint an image of consumers treading carefully on their way to the mall. Economists say that spending is unlikely to rebound with out a corresponding improvement inside the job market.

The unemployment rate remains stuck at nearly 10 percent, data released from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed hope. Mass layoffs have declined in proportions and frequency. And private-sector employment rose 0. 3 % in the third quarter, compared with last year, the 1st increase since 2008.

How will you increase add-on sales through the Holidays?

Here are some methods to raise the units per transaction, and improve the average transaction as a result.

If you like this, you should buy that - Creating feature areas in your store who have several major stuff you want to push for holiday encompassed by complimentary products helps sell more than just that particular item. Use signage and have your employees connect to customers to assist them to understand how the items come together.

Stuff the Stockings - I continue to push stocking stuffers for holiday as customers will always be searching for those unique, fun little items that round out their holiday gift giving without breaking the bank. Create a complete stocking stuffer display to make it interactive, as being a stocking stuffer smorgasbord to get customers to get more than one additional items.

Sample products - If they check it out, they'll buy it. Make sure you've products designed for testing everywhere and use signage, or have your employees interact to get customers to attempt different products. The opportunity for a sale rises significantly if you can position the product within the customer's hand.

A warm drink will be the approach to make them stay - offering a warm beverage like coffee or apple cider gets customers to linger longer. It provides them time to scope out much more of your store as they walk around enjoying their beverage. And that means they will often find more gifts than that they planned on, leading to increased sales.

Wrap the Cash Wrap - You've made a a few different ways inside your store to have your clients to buy more, and the cash wrap is the final opportunity. Make sure you have impulse items at your cash wrap that customers can grab and go. Products under $20 usually perform best. Bonuses for products that might be sampled along with 8-10 of which available for purchase.

And you? What are your favourite sales techniques to increase Holiday sales?

Are there any other honest publishers out there?

I was checking my Facebook page and noticed one of my connections had published her first book. I saw the publisher was Tate Publishing--a name that sounded vaguely familiar. After a little bit of investigating, I discovered that Victoria Strauss has listed them in her Writer Beware site for deceptive practices.

Now, if you are going to charge people for publishing, why call yourself a traditional, royalty-paying publisher? Traditional means no fee. Authors are dishing out thousands to this company ($4,000 on average, I hear, and it appears to be a big operation with dozens of departmental staff members). If their book does well, Tate may refund their money, they say, but how often does that happen? Has anyone looked into it?

I'm tired of all the deception out there in the publishing world. It's rampant, and it's what led me to add in our publishing division. We are upfront about our fees and services. A little honesty can go a long way.

WHY IS IT?

Why is it that:

1) Everytime my workload slows down, I try to hunt down new jobs, and then people who have kept me on hold suddenly flood in like a tidal wave?

2) I hurry to meet my client's deadline, and when I email to let the client know I've completed the assignment, the client takes his time getting back to me.

3) Ten people need me at once, or nobody needs me.

4) As soon as I get on the phone with an author, another author needs to reach me.

5) When I'm on a tight deadline, my email is not working or my phone is not working.

6) When we're almost ready to go to press, my production manager's computer crashes and important files for the book are lost.

7) I sometimes feel as if I'm the only one experiencing bad luck!

Don't Get Scammed by a Vanity Press
Donna Erickson · June 11, 2010

Lots of new authors are opting to self-publish their books because it's quicker and easier than traditional publishing. Self-publishing allows the author to have more control--especially in the areas of cover design and publication title. When new authors begin exploring their options, they often conduct a search online for self-publishing companies, which leads us to this critical question: Are the most popular listings for self-publishing companies on the Internet necessarily the best?

The answer to that question is "no." The companies on the top of the list have simply paid the most to appear there. These companies pay top-dollar to pay-per-click search engines to get to the top of the list. Does that make them better than the others? Absolutely not! They are just paying more money per click to have you visit their site.

In fact, some of these companies have been sued for not delivering what was promised. Others are outsourcing customer service to offshore affiliates, and customers are complaining about the inferior service. Lulu.com outsources to India, Authorhouse has affiliates in the Phillipines, and customers are reporting they cannot understand their questions and neither are knowledgeable or highly accessible.

Authorhouse, Xlibris, and iUniverse are all owned by the same company, Author Solutions. Accusations have been made that both Authorhouse and Xlibris have added additional fees to list books on amazon.com--after assuring their authors there would be no fees. In addition, Authorhouse lost a libel suit, after claiming they did not publish a book that was indeed published by them, and was charged a hefty amount in punitive damages.

Before you give any money to a publisher, make sure you research their background and policies--especially on contracts and refunds. Don't become the next victim with a "nightmare story" to share about vanity presses.

Self-Publishing Going Through The Roof!

Annie Jennings, national PR guru for 35,000 authors and experts (including Maya Angelou, F. Lee Bailey, Sylvia Browne, Deepak Chopra, and Louise Hay) asked me to do some research for her on the latest self-publishing statistics. Turns out RR Bowker (the only agency to issue ISBNs to worldwide authorized agents) reports that in 2009 there were one million books published and 700,000+ were self-published and micro-niche publications. Annie wants to write a book containing her PR tips for self-published authors and have me edit it. I'll keep you posted!

Here's what one reader had to say:

I was totally thrilled to read Donna's book, No Hassle Publishing. Finally, someone has written a clear and concise document on the state of the publishing industry and the options authors can now choose from. Donna outlines the pros and cons of self-publishing versus traditional publishing and lists all types of self-publishing companies that exist and how they are different. She talks about many specifics that authors need to know, such as how to use ISBN bar codes and what items to look for in a good contract. The book is an excellent overview for perspective authors, which will help them quickly decide the best publishing path to take. As an author and book coach, I will be sending all my clients to her website to read this book for up-to-date and valuable information about the publishing field. I am also delighted to see that Donna's company is now offering self-publishing services as well, as she is certainly an expert on how to do it right. Thank you for this fabulous resource.

Great Feedback on My Book, "No-Hassle Publishing: An Author's Guide to Today's Changing Industry"

So many new authors have no idea where to turn when the time comes to publish their book. I was recently told my instructional book is a godsend for new authors. If you know any new authors who could benefit from a professional guide that will help them avoid getting scammed, please refer them to my Bookstore on my website, www.aflairforwriting.com. I have uncovered information they are probably unaware of that could save them a lot of grief.

Asian Translator?

I'm always happy to receive feedback on my blog. Lately, there's quite a bit of feedback from the other side of the world. Unfortunately, I'm unable to decipher any of the Asian comments. I'm guessing it's Chinese, but I don't know for sure. Please contact me at donna@aflairforwriting.com if you know anyone who can translate these postings to my blog. Many thanks!

I'm A Published Author

When I published my ebook, I never really felt like a published author. I'm glad I did because it was a good way to work out the kinks and get started. But there was no tangible product for buyers, other than letter size pages to staple together. Since going to print and having an actual book to mail out, I've made my first sale and it feels wonderful. Now I feel like a real published author. Knowing I can help people by offering them "No-Hassle Publishing: An Author's Guide to Today's Changing Industry" is a great feeling.
